On of the happier moments of a Domino Administrators life is when they have the opportunity to migrate someone from Microsoft Outlook/Exchange to the glories of Lotus Notes/Domino. While there are many fine products out there from vendors like Binary Tree to assist with converting those folks from the evils of Exchange, lets not forget about the little gem with jagged edges that is
nupgrade.exe.

Recently, I have been tasked with converting several folks over from Exchange. In the past, all of my conversions have been from server to server using third party tools and having full access to both environments. But with this conversion, I have no access to the Exchange server and am only getting the PST's. While I'm sure it's not an impossible task, it's just not one that I've tackled before. And then I remembered nupgrade.exe. Nupgrade is a great little app that loads with Admin client on your desktop. It provides a quick and easy (dirty, hence the jagged edges comment) way to convert information contained in a PST or PAB to a NSF. But that's when I hit a roadblock. If you look at the screen shot above, note the Optional Parameters. Server, mailfile and noteID. Now, I don't know how you take that, but I saw that to mean I could put in additional switch information such as a server and mail file that I wanted the data to be converted to. But after several fruitless searches on Notes.Net and the support site, I decided to call support and open a PMR. With the expert help of the IBM'er on the other end, we were able to conclude that you cannot convert the data from a PST to a mailfile on the server the way you may think with this app. Nupgrade will convert the data from a PST to a NSF, but by default, the NSF will be created only on your local machine as an archive file. You could map a drive on your local machine to a server and redirect the creation of the file to the server, but if you've already created the mail file, you can't merge it in. The technote he referenced can be located
here.
So, it looks like I have some more work to do on this conversion.
Never a dull moment, is there ;-)

Andy, I used this tool back in 2002 to migrate local PST files (about 600 of them!) to Domino. It is actually an option with the Notes Client - not just the Admin client. So you can use it on any desktop. Back then at 6.0, the only option was to use a local file "mail/a_personalfolders.nsf" (probably the same as you have it now). What I ended up doing was creating a local replica of the user's mail file using the name that the nupgrade tool wants to use. Then when the user next replicates, the data from the PST is pushed up to the server. Bada-boom, bada-bing!!
I could have sworn that the new features work for specifying a server...
Chris, I kneel before your awesomeness! I would have not thought about taking that approach in 1000 years! I tried it this morning and it worked GREAT! I see a SnTT post coming out of this ;-)
You are the man! Thanks bro!
Andy - I owe you a shedload of beer! Thank you very much!
